Free Emergency Calls from Ships to Naval Forces

The International Maritime Bureau reports that pirates were holding 28 ships and 518AntiPiracy hostages for ransom as of the end of April 2011. More than 117 ships were attacked, and 20 seized, by pirates off the coast of Somalia since January 1, 2011 alone.

Iridium has announced an important new program for defending against piracy on the oceans, by providing mariners with global, reliable, cost-effective voice and data communications. Effective immediately, all calls from ships equipped with Iridium’s reliable communications terminals to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center are now free of charge.

“As a service to our important maritime customers, we strongly support the improvement of communications for ships who may encounter piracy,” said Dan Mercer, vice president and general manager, Europe, Middle East, Africa & Russia, Iridium.

Ships are increasingly using ‘citadels,’ where crew can take refuge and wait safely for rescue when pirates board. A key element in the citadel strategy is a stand-alone, secure Iridium communications link to the outside world, so the crew can connect with the military forces to coordinate rescue operations. Several companies within the Iridium partner ecosystem offer citadel communication packages with a concealed external satellite antenna and cabling that cannot be easily disabled by the pirates on the ship.

“Recognizing that Iridium can provide a critical communications lifeline in a potentially life-threatening situation, it is our responsibility to support the crew by removing any barriers to free and open communication with authorities,” said Mercer.

The UKMTO office in Dubai is the primary point of contact between merchant shipping and naval forces patrolling the danger zone off the Somali coast. UKMTO has direct communication to all naval assets in the area and plays a key role in coordinating the naval response when pirates board and attack ships. Under Iridium’s calling plan, all calls to the UKMTO +971 number will be connected through the Iridium network free of charge.

Iridium 9555 External Antenna

To install the Antenna Adapter

1. Remove the small antenna plug protector from the back of your Iridium 9555 phone.

2.Slide the phone into the antenna adapter and make sure the pin fits into the back of the Iridium satphone. It should snap into place.

3. Screw the external antenna into the docking cable.

The Antenna Adapter allows you to connect your Iridium 9555 satellite phone to an external antenna. The adapter uses a TNC female connector to attach to an antenna cable with a TNC male connector.

Check your Iridium Airtime via SMS

Iridium now offers SMS Balance Check, providing the ability for customers using prepaid e-vouchers to send a balance inquiry via an SMS to 2888 in order to receive their current status for no charge. This feature was created in response to customers who have asked for a visual way to see their number of minutes and days remaining before their e-vouchers expire as an alternative to the current voice-based balance check system. The voice-based system will continue to be available and both will be offered at no additional charge to allow customers to check their prepaid e-voucher balance.

To use this new feature, follow these instructions:

1. Compose a blank SMS and send to 2888 (+2888 or 002888 will also work)

2. An SMS response will be sent back to the device from the Iridium system.

3. The message will contain the number of remaining ISU-PSTN minutes in the account, the number of days until the account expires, and the date and time (GMT) of expiration in English.

ISU = Iridium Satellite Unit, PSTN = Landline

2011 Iditarod(R) Sled Dog Race

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race, also known as the “Last Great Race on Earth,” runs from Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea. The race covers more than 1,049 miles in 10 to 17 days. The iconic competition pays homage to the mushers who, in 1925, raced across the Alaskan wilderness to deliver needed diphtheria serum to Nome via the Iditarod Trail mail routes.

Each of the Iditarod racers will be armed with an Iridium-based GPS tracking devices. These devices will track the sled’s location, speed, heading, altitude and air temperature every 15 minutes through the Iridium satellite network.

The racers will also be equipped with Iridium satellite phones, which will be used for race safety communications during the race.

Race fans can view the sleds’ position updates transmitted via Iridium 24 hours a day on www.iditarod.com. The racers themselves will not be able to view the data from the trackers in the field.

“Safety is our number one priority for the Iditarod, and Iridium is the only satellite system that provides reliable coverage across the entire Iditarod trail,” said Stan Hooley, executive director of the Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC). “At many of the checkpoints throughout the trail, we are relying solely on the Iridium tracking devices and phone handsets to provide a critical safety and communications lifeline for the mushers, dogs, medical personnel, media, bush pilots and volunteers who staff the isolated checkpoints along the trail.”

“For over five years, Iridium and our partners have supported the Iditarod,” said Greg Ewert, executive vice president, global distribution channels for Iridium. “We wish all the mushers a safe and successful race as they face this supremely difficult challenge.”

First Iridium NEXT Hosted Payload Agreement Signed

Iridium announced that Orbital Sciences Corporation has signed an agreement with Iridium that reserves hosted payload capacity on Iridium’s next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT.

Under the terms of the agreement, Orbital will make several non-refundable deposits totaling $10 million in 2011 for a right-of-first refusal on 20 percent of the network’s capacity to host third-party payloads. The parties also have agreed to the basic terms of Orbital purchasing this hosted payload capacity on behalf of its customers.

“Orbital’s far-sighted move validates the value and importance of commercially hosted payloads,” said General Lance W. Lord (USAF-Ret.), who serves on Iridium’s Government Advisory Board. “Under President Obama’s National Space Policy, it is clear that our government departments and agencies are directed to take advantage of private sector investments to lower the overall cost of space missions, and this new agreement is a great step forward.”

Orbital and Iridium are working closely together to market this capacity to specific U.S. government customers to ensure the program can meet the Iridium NEXT deployment timelines and is consistent with other hosted payload programs.

Iridium CEO Matt Desch said, “Commercially hosted payloads on Iridium NEXT offer a significant opportunity to government programs. To achieve the cost savings that commercial hosted payloads offer, it is imperative that companies, and government and research organizations, make plans and design systems now – in advance of our first launches, which are scheduled for 2015. With this agreement, Orbital has locked-in capacity today to ensure certain missions can meet our commercial time lines. While Iridium is working with a number of potential hosted payload customers, and expects to announce additional deals in the coming 12-18 months, it’s wonderful to have taken this significant first step.”
